Flute Fest Fun

## Friday morning, Anders Hagberg and I set up for our “Meditative Hour” concert. This was well received and was a welcome “chill out” pause from the many Workshops and Masterclasses.

Anders had his Contrabass, Alto and regular Flute with him plus his sound card, microphone and computer, all very compact!  He did say he had to leave out his fancy shoes however. (LOL!)

## Day One of the Flute Fest Fun

Afterwards, we hacked our brains with Shanna Pranaitis who gave some great tips for nervousness and becoming present from Hypnotherapist Melissa Tiers.

Then I dropped into a Masterclass with Mario Caroli, especially since I was going to be playing for him the next day!   I’ll be performing the Mozart G major Flute Concerto at the end of May in a Cathedral so I thought it would be good to run it by a super flutist first!

There was a little welcoming party at the end of the day, and I got to rub shoulders with the inimitable Paul Edmund-Davies, who showed me a photo of himself with my teacher, Robert (Bob) Aitken since he had just come back from teaching in Toronto!

I also had a good conversation with [Erika](http://erikauggowitzer.com) from “[Playing left handed”](http://www.linksgespielt.de). This is a website that shows how much easier it is for left handed people to play left handed instruments!

Then back to my lovely AirBnB only minutes away.  Much to my delight, my host told me she was doing “The Course in Miracles”!

## Day Two of the Flute Fest Fun

After a good night’s sleep, I was ready for my lesson, and it went swimmingly!  Mario Caroli was very encouraging and helpful.  We only made it through the exposition of the first movement, but he had so many good ideas and suggestions!  Definitely well worth it.

Then there was  a lunch time concert of a really very good flute Ensemble from Frankfurt, followed by a concert of the Röhren Trio (Tube Trio) of 3 men on Contrabass flutes!  (They also played Alto and Bass Flutes).  They each had written several pieces for their trio, so the program was very interesting and varied!
Tilmann Dehnhard started with two of his very well crafted compositions.
Anders Hagberg wrote a piece that I found very moving,

“[Evening Hymn from Gammelsvenskby](https://open.spotify.com/track/5dujZWYjyv5XD04z03Ba2g)”.  It was inspired by a Swedish village in Ukraine by Kherson that has been levelled to the ground by the war.
One of Ned McGowan’s pieces is called “45,000 years of Winter” and has a very meditative quality.  (Always interesting for me.)
The three of them together was really powerful and great advertising for Contrabass flutes as a must have instrument!

I then had time to drop in on an eye opening piccolo class by Vincent Cortvrint who had a very interesting way to get inside the student’s actual experience to make his illuminating points.  And he was funny too!
This was followed by the competition winners performing with orchestra!
Below, you can see the Adams motto: “Together in Music”.

There was also a flute choir performing Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater later that evening in a church.  This was the rehearsal:

## Day Three of the Flute Fest Fun

The last day, where I played some Mozart for the wonderful Anna Garzuly.  The person before me was playing the Doppler Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy, and Anna told the story of how the Doppler brothers based the ornaments on how they had heard the shepherds playing them on their flutes – very fast, just like wiggling your fingers madly!  A completely different version than I had ever heard, but extremely realistic. At my lesson, she was also really supportive and had lots of helpful suggestions.  Proof positive that it is definitely worth it to play for other professionals whenever possible!

Then I went to a workshop based on the book by the musician and neuroscientist Molly Gebrian “Learn Faster, Perform Better” after which I immediately bought the book, and would suggest you have a look at it too!

A quick visit to Peter Verhoyen’s piccolo Masterclass was entertaining and elucidating as usual, and then to the closing “Goodbye” concert.

## We heard an absolutely amazing concert by Jasmine Choi

![Jasmine Choi on stage, with flute](https://nandinmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Jasmine-Choi-981x1024.jpg)

She started by playing a her own composition “Homesick” for solo Alto flute, a tribute to her mother who she said was also was her best friend and who had passed last year. She was very moved when she told us, and so were we, when she played.

She then wowed us all with her superbly virtuosic performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, which she said she had heard since she was a little kid. (Her mom was a professional violinist!)

She ended with another incredibly breathtaking piece by Pablo de Sarasate called Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Op. 20 (arr.Choi).  I was sitting beside the piccolo virtuoso, Peter Verhoyen and jokingly suggested he play it on piccolo.  He said he already had, and that it is much easier than on the flute!

## Looking back – and forward

So, it was another fulfilling weekend in the Netherlands.  Many people from many countries, all coming together to make music.

Next on my list is playing Mozart in the Cathedral on May 31st followed by an outdoor concert in July playing Brandenburg 2, and then off to Portland Oregon for “The Meditative Hour” at the National Flute Convention!  But more on all that next time.

****Musical and Meditative Greetings!****
